Construction at Calgary’s Brookfield Place accelerating rapidly

Careful planning and creative collaboration are allowing construction at Brookfield Place Calgary to progress several weeks ahead of schedule.

Walters is already installing steel on floors numbering in the high thirties, and we expect to complete all 57 main storeys, as well as an additional three-storey crown structure by the summer of 2016.

“Everything is moving very well,” says Project Manager, Derek Howchin. “There is usually a sizable gap between where the concrete forming ends and the steel work begins. Our team is working pretty much right on the heels of the concrete contractor.” He credits the project’s primary contractor, EllisDon, and owner, Brookfield Office Properties, for helping the Walters team work so smoothly with others on site. “We are able to use what we have learned from working on so many other towers to speed up the process,” he says. “EllisDon are great partners. It is amazing what can happen when everyone involved really knows how to build towers.”

An additional Walters team has been working since mid-November on the ground-level pavilion. “The 60-foot-high transparent glass pavilion is a high-profile structure,” says Howchin. “It sits at the west side of the tower, and encompasses a large atrium area with large exposed structural steel tubular columns. Being at street level, the pavilion is what people will see first. Brookfield Place will definitely be an impressive showpiece for Calgary.”
