Walters Awarded Process Plant Steel Contract for Gahcho Kué Project

We are pleased to announce that De Beers Canada Inc. has selected Walters to provide the structural steel and erect the main process plant building for the Gahcho Kué Project, located 280 km northeast of Yellowknife, Northwest Territories.

The scope of this project includes the erection of the main process building which is comprised of four major industrial structures under one roof truss system. In addition to the steel structure erection, the project includes rough setting of all major pieces of equipment over 5 tonnes.

With approximately 3,300 tonnes of structural steel required and major vessels weighing up to 70 tonnes each, there will be a workforce of approximately 70 employees in addition to three cranes at the peak of construction working around the clock in one of Canada’s harshest climates. Walters will be mobilizing in February 2015 to receive and stage structural steel being delivered along the Tibbitt to Contwoyto ice road. Steel erection will commence in May 2015 and is projected to be completed in the Fall of 2015.

The Gahcho Kué Project is a joint venture between De Beers Canada (51%) and Mountain Province Diamonds (49%). An open pit diamond mine, Gahcho Kué is expected to go into operations in late 2016.
