Detour Lake Gold Mine

The Detour Lake Gold mine is Canada’s largest operating gold mine. Walters Inc. completed the detailing, supply, and erection of over 9,000 tonnes of structural steel which forms the backbone of the Detour facility. This complex project was completed through careful planning, teamwork, and the perseverance of our site team who worked through a harsh Northern Ontario winter to ensure the project was a success.

Facts & Figures
  • Completed April 2012
  • Over 9000 tonnes of structural steel forms the backbone of the facility
  • Canada’s largest operating gold mine
  • Approximately 6800 tonnes of structural steel completed on a “fast-track” schedule

Our Role

To meet an accelerated construction schedule, Walters offered extensive Design Assist services and worked closely with the design team to synchronize that work with steel fabrication for the Detour Lake Gold Mine.

Overcoming Challenges

We began with a partial release of drawings and a very short construction window.  The clients wanted all buildings complete and cladded before the cold weather of the following winter. We coordinated design and fabrication work to accelerate the process and self-shipped more than 400 truckloads of steel over rough roads in order to meet the deadlines.
