Plate-fabricated blackened steel treads and risers ascend four flights within the New York offices of this global branding firm, featuring an innovative bird nest guard rail, and cantilevered supports.

To achieve the airy, cantilevered effect, we hid massive HSS steel supports behind the walls. The architects presented us with a wire mesh “bird nest” guard rail which they found appealing. We had to create that look using materials and production methods that would meet strength, safety and engineering requirements.
There are splices throughout the guard rail (necessitated by the simple field requirement that all components had to be brought in via elevator) – no piece could be longer than eight feet. We were pleased that the joins are so discreet that they are imperceptible.
