On November 3rd, Walters Group, the Calgary Municipal Land Corporation (CMLC), the Calgary Stampede, PCL Construction and partners celebrated an essential milestone in completing the BMO Centre Expansion steel structure. Calgary Municipal Land Corporation (CMLC) and the Calgary Stampede held a customary topping ceremony by signing the final steel beam for the ceremonial lift. Walters supplied and installed approximately 11,000 tons of structural steel and 58,000 m2 metal deck and feature stairs.

This ‘topping-off’ ceremony is a tradition in commercial steel construction that celebrates the completion of a building’s frame. At the ‘last beam’ celebration, the final piece is typically signed by the team and hoisted with a fir tree on top. While it marks a significant project milestone, it also symbolizes good luck for the rest of the building’s construction and its future occupants.

“Congratulations to our valued partners and the entire field team for an exceptional job. Walters Field Services has been working in Calgary for many years now, and as always, the highly skilled Ironworkers from local 725 met the challenge of a demanding schedule,” said Bryce Mesley, Construction Manager at Walters Group.

The BMO Centre expansion is the largest conference facility in western Canada and the second largest in the country. The innovative new building, at approximately 565,000 square feet, will feature three floors of tradeshow and convention space, including new exhibition halls, two ballrooms and a central hub. The exterior showcases retail and café spaces, a pavilion and public art installations.
