This month marks the 10-year anniversary of Tim Hortons Field. Ten years ago, Walters Group, in partnership with a joint venture between Kenaidan Contracting Ltd. and Bouygues Construction, built this 22,500-seat stadium. Working with ARUP engineers, CannonDesign and FaulknerBrowns Architects, the stadium has become the home of the Hamilton Tiger-Cats and a venue for major events, including the 2015 Pan American Games and the 2023 Grey Cup, among many others.
Built on the site of the old Ivor Wynne Stadium, foundation work for Tim Hortons Field began in the winter of 2013. The design met international standards and offered views of the Niagara Escarpment. The stadium features two tiers of seating on each side, with significant steel components, including rakers that support the bleachers. The project was completed on schedule for the 2014 football season, marking a significant achievement for everyone involved.
Walters Group fabricated all the structural steel, including the steel stairs for the east and west stands. As we look back on our time on this project, we reflect on the challenges of working in a densely populated residential area. Coordinating multiple trades and cranes in this tight space required careful planning and coordination. To manage noise levels and ensure safety, we used Tension Control bolts (TCBs). TCBs are high-strength fasteners used in steel construction to ensure precise tension, crucial for structural integrity. They generate less noise during installation because the tightening process is controlled by a specialized tool that eliminates the need for impact tools and re-torquing.
As we celebrate this 10-year milestone, we want to acknowledge the dedication of all those involved in the project. Walters Group is proud to have contributed to such an iconic landmark in our local community and we look forward to another ten years of major events that continue to bring people together in Hamilton.
