High Performance Coatings

At Walters Group, our coatings play an important role in extending the life of the structural steel we fabricate. We specialize in delivering high-quality industrial coatings across a wide range of sectors and applications, from large-scale infrastructure projects to complex structural steel fabrication. Whether safeguarding against corrosion, extreme weather conditions, or meeting rigorous project specifications, our team has the expertise to deliver.

Our facilities include large manual and automated structural blasters, large cross-draft state-of-the-art temperature-controlled paint booths, curing ovens, among other capabilities, serviced by up to 40-ton crane capacity.

Our Services

We offer a full range of surface preparation and protective coating services.

Abrasive Blast

Abrasive Blasting

Surface preparation for steel structures using various blasting media and techniques to ensure optimal coating adhesion.

Liquid Coatings

Liquid Coatings & Linings

Application of high-performance liquid coatings for corrosion resistance, fireproofing, and aesthetic finishes.

Epoxy Systems

Epoxy and Polyurethane Systems

Durable, chemically resistant systems are ideal for industrial, marine, and infrastructure applications.

Intumescent

Intumescent Fireproofing

Passive fire protection solutions that meet stringent safety requirements while maintaining aesthetic appeal.

Hot-Dip Galvanizing

Hot-Dip Galvanizing

A cost-effective and sustainable method of corrosion protection, ideal for long-term durability in outdoor and industrial environments, galvanizing provides decades of maintenance-free protection, even in the most demanding conditions.

Tracking System

At Walters, quality and accountability are built into every step, including how we track each component. Our tracking system allows us to monitor parts throughout the entire process, from fabrication to final inspection to shipping.

Each piece is scanned and linked to a unique identifier, which allows our team to:

  • Instantly access real-time status updates
  • View fabrication and coating details and specifications
  • Track inspection milestones and quality control checkpoints
  • Confirm shipping readiness, delivery schedules, and final install
  • This digital system ensures full traceability, reduces errors, and increases project transparency, giving you confidence in the progress and integrity of every coated component.

Industry Trusted Brands

We partner with leading material suppliers and equipment manufacturers to ensure every coating project meets the highest durability, performance, and compliance standards. We utilize systems from globally recognized brands.

Coating Brands

  • PPG Protective & Marine Coatings
  • Sherwin-Williams
  • Carboline
  • AkzoNobel (parent company of International Paint)
  • Tnemec

These partnerships give us access to advanced coating technologies, expert support, and high-performance systems tailored for a variety of applications and environmental conditions.

RAL Colour Compliance

We follow the RAL matching system, an industry standard commonly used for powder coatings and industrial finishes.

By combining high-end products with our technical expertise, Walters ensures consistent results that align with project requirements, environmental standards, and client expectations.

Coatings Projects

We’ve contributed to some of North America’s most iconic projects. From bridge girders to commercial, institutional and industrial structural steel, our coatings ensure long-term durability and performance.

Some of our projects include:

  • Large-scale bridge projects
  • Primer and coatings for institutional and industrial projects
  • Fireproofed structural steel for commercial high-rise construction

Project Applications

Our coatings expertise supports a wide range of sectors — from complex architectural steel to industrial and infrastructure-scale assemblies. Below are a few examples that highlight the diversity of our work and the tailored coating solutions applied for each.

Commercial

160 Front Street (Toronto, ON)

Atrium

Architectural Exposed Structural Steel (AESS) was prominently featured in the building’s atrium side, showcasing a refined, high-visibility finish.

Industrial

BHP Jansen Potash

BHP Mining Facility

  • A-Frame/Headframe comprised of a multi-coat system with zinc primer and epoxy. The exterior steel consisted of an inorganic zinc-rich primer, an epoxy mid coat and a polyurethane topcoat. The interior steel included a three-coat system.
  • Shaft Structural Steel comprised of a coating system that uses an inorganic zinc-rich coating, an epoxy mid, and an epoxy topcoat colour Pumice. For the Brattice Panels (framing and expanded mesh).
  • The system uses an inorganic zinc-rich primer, an epoxy mid coat, and an epoxy topcoat in colour Safety Yellow.

Alamos Gold Mine

A hybrid protection was used, including hot-dip galvanizing for below-grade shaft steel and liquid-applied coatings for above-ground components, ensuring durability in both subterranean and exposed conditions.

Institutional

Canadian Museum for Human Rights

Canadian Museum for Human Rights (Winnipeg, MB)

Highly detailed Architectural Exposed Structural Steel was coated to AESS Category 1, 2 and 3 standards, demanding precision fabrication and high-quality finish for this landmark cultural institution.

Limberlost Place

Steel elements received an alkyd shop primer, providing initial corrosion protection during storage and handling before final installation in this mass timber, academic hybrid structure.

Infrastructure

Kingston Third Crossing (Waaban Crossing)

One of Canada’s largest multi-span bridges, the project involved coating steel only at the ends where components connect. A three-coat system was used in accordance with MTO specifications, with weathering steel used throughout the rest of the structure.

Burgoyne Bridge (St. Catharines, ON)

Steel on the pedestrian portion was a three-coat system to meet aesthetic and environmental performance.
