Steel erection is officially underway at Kitchener’s new indoor recreation complex, with the first columns installed on November 18 using a 150-ton crawler crane. Walters Group mobilized on-site earlier in November to begin this significant phase of construction.
As part of the project, Walters Group is supplying and installing approximately 2,700 tons of structural steel, including galvanized metal decking, open web steel joists, and stairs. A key feature will be the 250-foot-long, 20-foot-deep steel trusses for the indoor soccer field, which will be stick-built on site and lifted in two halves using tandem cranes in early 2025.
Located at RBJ Schlegel Park, the facility will include an aquatics centre, a FIFA-sized indoor soccer field, and more, setting a new standard for sustainable recreation buildings in Canada. Designed to achieve net-zero carbon status, it incorporates geothermal heating and cooling, as well as an extensive solar panel system, reducing carbon emissions by 22 tons annually and saving an estimated $100,000 in utility costs each year.
