Belmont Park’s Grandstand Redevelopment modernizes its historic racing venue, while preserving its legacy and supporting the future of thoroughbred racing.
This ribbon-inspired facility includes club and dining areas, private suites, and an open-air “Mercado”. The five-level structure also features a top-level terrace beneath an elegant canopy offering panoramic views.
In addition, two new dormitories, with a third planned, and residential housing will also be constructed to serve the needs of owners, trainers and jockeys.
Walters Group was responsible for supplying and installing the new grandstand structure, including the base building and roof truss system. Metropolitan Walters was responsible for the erection crew on site.
The ambitious scale of the trusses and canopy, along with the structure’s intricate geometry, presented unique challenges. The Walters Group team applied innovative engineering strategies to manage deflection, ensure stability, and execute the canopy’s impressive span, achieving both structural integrity and architectural elegance. This was made possible through the meticulous planning of the Metropolitan Walters field team and the Design and Production teams’ deep expertise in coordinating the project’s complex structural steel requirements.
