CIBC Square - Overbuild

The CIBC SQUARE overbuild is a public space that spans 16 live railway tracks in downtown Toronto, located above Union Station. This elevated space, now complete, features a park with various amenities and landscaping elements. The overbuild structure serves to connect the two towers of the CIBC SQUARE development, providing valuable public space in a dense urban environment. Advanced steel construction was used to support the park above the active rail corridor.

Our Role

Walters Group supplied and installed the steel structure that supports the overbuild. Our team completed the installation of steel trusses, infill, and metal decking. Coordination with our valued partner, EllisDon, was essential for the completion of the overbuild, particularly given the complexities of working above live rail tracks and in a busy downtown area.

The 81 Bay overbuild development was divided into six phases, with erection occurring from April 2018 to early 2019.

Overcoming Challenges

This project presented unique challenges, including the handling and positioning of over 100 large trusses. Limited on-site staging space required just-in-time deliveries, and all site work had to be performed between midnight and 5 a.m. to avoid disruptions to Toronto’s train schedules.
