The newly built $1.3 billion Cortellucci Vaughan Hospital (formerly Mackenzie Vaughan Hospital), is located on the northwest corner of Jane and Major Mackenzie drive in Vaughan Ontario.
Improving access to care in the area, this 11-storey state-of-the-art healthcare facility has a 1,200,000-square-foot hospital with inpatient medical-surgical units positioned on a diagnostic and treatment podium. Essential clinical programs include emergency services, diagnostic imaging, surgical services, critical care unit, neonatal intensive care unit, mental health inpatient services, and more. The facility features 353 beds with the capacity to expand to approximately 500 beds in total.
Cortellucci Vaughan Hospital was the first hospital to be built in the York Region in the last 30 years and is the first hospital in Canada to feature fully integrated “smart” technology systems.
Walters role was to supply and install all structural steel for the Central Utility Plant (CUP) building which houses all the power, heating, generators and IT for the hospital. The three stacks with perforated panels for the CUP were lifted as one assembly. In addition, we supplied and installed the steel for the ambulance bay steel and decking.
The Stacks required some challenges in how to build them, where to build them, and in how to accommodate the mechanical contractor.
