GTAA Terminal 3 Early Baggage Storage

The Greater Toronto Airports Authority (GTAA) partnered with PCL Construction and Beumer Group to install a new automated baggage system at Terminal 3 of Toronto Pearson Airport. The Early Baggage Storage (EBS) facility is the first stage of the baggage system, designed to provide a smooth and efficient passenger experience. The GTAA Early Baggage Storage Facility at Terminal 3 is located at Gate 37 and allows passengers to check in their bags hours before their flight. The baggage is stored and released efficiently to support peak volumes. The new EBS system will increase the overall capacity of the baggage system and is a crucial step in creating a leading edge at Toronto Pearson Airport.

Our Role

To minimize disruptions to airport operations, PCL Construction and Beumer Group partnered with Walters Group to employ modular construction techniques. The steel structure for the enclosure, which will house a conveyor connecting the new storage facility to the main baggage line for Pier C of Terminal 3, was prefabricated by the Walters team. To save time, a modular 44-tonne structural steel section was supplied and installed for the GTAA Early Baggage Storage Facility at Terminal 3, Pearson Airport.

Overcoming Challenges

Each modular component was lifted by a crane before being bolted into place. The largest piece weighed approximately 13,000 lbs.
