Manhattan West: Northeast Tower (One Manhattan West)

One Manhattan West is a 71-storey tower utilized for office, residential and retail use. The tower is a key part of the Manhattan West Development which consists of 5,400,000 square feet of mixed-use space. This includes two large office towers and one residential tower, along with a two-acre public park that transects the site. Subsequently, the northeast office tower boasts 2,073,000 sq. ft. of rentable floor space and  1,390,000 sq. ft. of decked floor space, as a result, requiring 18,000 tons of structural steel.

Facts & Figures
  • Approximately 70 pieces required specialized shipping equipment.
  • Approximately 6 million pounds of plate material, ranging from ½” to 6” thickness, was used to fabricate the built-up sections and connections in Phase 1 (Up to Level 6).
  • The largest assembly, which sits in the South East Corner of the core, extends 70 ft from the basement levels and weighed 87 Tons.
  • Much of the Steel core in Phase 1 was encased in concrete, creating the base for the rest of the tower. Thousands of reinforcing bars were bent and formed around the steel frame. To provide a connection to the steel, 6000 couplers were coordinated and welded to the assemblies. The largest coupler used was to accommodate a 2 ¾” diameter bar.
Our Role

Walters and Metropolitan Walters were responsible for the supply and installation of all structural steel for this project.

Challenges

Complex Geometry and the use of heavy plates offered numerous challenges not only for the fitters but also for the welders who when welding were sitting atop an assembly that had to be pre-heated to 300F when performing CJP welds. Shipments during the Quebec Spring Thaw Period had to be well thought out due to weight restrictions.  The maximum load on steering axles is limited for up to six weeks of the year to prevent excessive damage to Quebec Roads. To tackle this, larger trailers with more axles were used to distribute the load.
