Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) Phillip and Susan Ragon Building Project (Phase 1)

Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) has embarked on a multi-year construction project to address a critical shortage of inpatient beds, enhance patient care, and unite specialty medical services under one roof. Designed by NBBJ, the project will feature two towers with 482 private beds, new facilities to treat cardiac and cancer patients, and the potential for a new public transit connection. With the help of McNamara Salvia, Structural Engineering, the facility will be situated entirely on Mass General’s campus, framed by Cambridge, North Grove, Parkman and Blossom streets.

The Phillip and Susan Ragon Building will feature spacious operating and procedural rooms, imaging facilities, infusion rooms, exam rooms and clinical support space for pharmacy and dietary services. Additionally, there will be 566 parking spots for bicycles on the grounds with a 6- level underground parking garage that will accommodate 864 vehicles for patients and families.

Our Role

Walters Group is playing a pivotal role in Phase 1 of the MGH Phillip and Susan Ragon Building Project, led by a joint venture between Turner Construction and Walsh Brothers Inc in Boston. Phase 1 involves up-down construction of a 19-story tower along with 6 levels of parking, a central 5 story podium and a pedestrian bridge. The tower features a steel core with side plates and a brace frame system, requiring a total of 10,500 tons of steel. Construction is expected to last approximately 4 years, with the first side of the building opening in 2027.

Our partners in Boston, BOSS Steel, will oversee the installation process at MGH. Upon the anticipated completion of the first tower in early 2025, Walters’ focus will transition to initiating the bridge construction in late 2025. The collaborative efforts of the joint venture between Turner Construction and Walsh Brothers Inc with Walters Group and BOSS Steel are propelling the MGH Phillip and Susan Ragon Building Project towards successful realization, marking a significant milestone in Boston’s architectural landscape.

Overcoming Challenges

Navigating logistics in Boston’s downtown core, with limited laydown and storage space, will undoubtedly pose a significant challenge, especially with plans for up-down construction.

However, strategic solutions, including a solid backlog of fabricated material and the utilization of local Marshalling Yards, will empower us to overcome these hurdles. Additionally, implementing JIT delivery and utilizing Derrick Plans will facilitate precise timing and temporary steel storage capabilities, eliminating the need for long-term on-site storage. This innovative approach streamlines construction despite anticipated logistical constraints.
