Seaport District Block L5 Tower

Boston Seaport District Block L5 Tower is a 707,000 sq. ft. mixed-use building home to the city’s largest Net Zero Carbon facility. The 17-storey office tower constructed by Turner Construction and designed by Henning Larson and Gensler will house office space and two long-awaited performing arts centers.

The building’s ground level will feature retail space and a new performing arts center comprising two live performance venues of 500 and 100 seats. The building is situated in front of a 1.5-acre park that opened in 2021 as the center of Harbor Way. This new pedestrian-friendly artery will connect the heart of the Seaport to the water’s edge and provide the district with new public green space. One Boston Wharf Road will reduce the building’s greenhouse gas emissions by 90.1% below the state’s strict Stretch Energy Code requirements and eliminate 5.1 million pounds of CO2 emissions annually.

Our Role

For Boston Seaport District Block L5 Tower, Walters supplied and installed the core structural steel. Our partners in RECAL will aid in the fabrication of the plate girders. Our new partner in Boston, BOSS Steel, completed the installation. Erection to start in November 2022 through June 2023.

Overcoming Challenges

The supply process of complex columns, plate girders, and massive trusses was challenging. The heaviest girders, two being 165T and 168T will support the main building column, a structural requirement.
