Skills Ontario 2024: Walters Group Hosts Elementary Workshop and Metal Fabrication Competition

May 15, 2024

Walters Group recently hosted an Elementary Workshop and Metal Fabrication Competition at Skills Ontario, Canada’s largest skilled trades competition, for the 9th year. Participants across different age groups showed interest in metal fabrication and welding, reflecting a promising future for the steel industry.

The Elementary Workshop, now in its second year, offered young Grades 7 and 8 students an opportunity to explore welding and metal fabrication, drawing significant interest at our booth. From its modest beginnings with 6 competitors, this year’s Metal Fabricator Competition saw intense rivalry with 14 participants from all over Ontario, showcasing remarkable talent and dedication synonymous with Walters Group.

We thank the Canadian Institute of Steel Construction (CISC) for their continuing generous sponsorship, which was instrumental in making the workshop and competition possible. We also want to extend a special thank you to Russel Metals for donating all the steel materials for the welding demonstrations and competition, Henlex for handling the fume collection, Air Liquide for providing the gas for thermal cutting and welding and Miller for delivering all the welding equipment for the competition. Without the participation of colleges, this competition would not be possible. We extend a special thank you to Durham College who donated the use of our welding tables, Mohawk College and  Ogwehoweh Skills and Trades Training Centre who donated gas carts, cutting tables and torch sets.

Walters Group is dedicated to supporting initiatives like Skills Ontario, fostering future careers in the steel industry. By engaging with aspiring metal fabricators and welders, we invest in the future of metal fabrication and welding, empowering individuals to pursue rewarding careers in the steel industry.
