Walters Group was honoured to welcome Prime Minister Mark Carney to the Hamilton Campus on July 16. During his visit, the Prime Minister announced a set of targeted measures to support Canada’s steel industry, protect Canadian jobs, and invest in homegrown industrial capacity to build a stronger Canada. His announcement signals a strong and timely commitment from the federal leadership.

The new framework is designed to restrict the import of dumped steel and strengthen the national steel sector. Prime Minister Carney introduced tighter import regulations, including tariff-rate quotas, increased surtaxes, and enhanced traceability for steel originating from China.

These new measures will help ensure that Canadian steel fabricators remain resilient, competitive, and proudly Canadian. We support this important step forward and look forward to continued collaboration to strengthen our domestic steel fabricating industry.
