Walters Group attended the groundbreaking ceremony for Kitchener’s new indoor recreation complex on May 31st, accompanied by our valued partners at Multiplex as well as Mayor Berry Vrbanovic, City of Kitchener Council Members and the area MP and MPP. We are honoured to have been awarded this project to supply and install the structural steel building components, galvanized metal decking, open web steel joists and stairs. This project marks Kitchener’s first net-zero carbon building and will stand as one of Canada’s most sustainable recreation facilities.
The recreation complex, designed by Unity Studio Design, will feature advanced geothermal heating and cooling systems and an array of solar panels, enabling the complex to reduce carbon emissions by 22 tonnes annually. These green initiatives are expected to save the city approximately $100,000 in utility costs each year.
The indoor recreation complex will also serve as a community hub with amenities catering to the diverse interests of Kitchener’s community. Highlights include a FIFA-sized indoor soccer field that can be subdivided into four smaller fields. Walters Group will be supplying 256-foot long and 20-foot deep heavy steel trusses for the indoor soccer field, ensuring its structural integrity. More amenities include an indoor aquatics centre with viewing areas and pools for both recreational and competitive use, an elevated indoor walking track, and an indoor cricket batting cage.
This project represents a significant step towards sustainability for the City of Kitchener and sets a precedent for future developments in Canada. Walters Group is honoured to contribute to such an innovative and eco-conscious project, marking a milestone in our commitment to sustainable building practices.
