Walters Group to provide structural steel for new GE Power manufacturing plant in Welland, ON

PCL Constructors Canada Inc. (Toronto) has selected Walters Group as its trade partner to supply, fabricate and erect the steel for GE Power’s new 450,000-square-foot multi-modal manufacturing plant in Welland, Ontario.

The fast-tracked project has an aggressive construction schedule beginning in late 2016 and will require the erection of more than 6,000 tons of steel trusses, columns, crane runways, and other framing by mid-2017.

“We will pull out all the stops in order to meet the project construction schedule,” said Walters Executive Vice President Peter Kranendonk. “We are proud to contribute to this facility, which will create new manufacturing jobs in Southern Ontario.”

In addition to fabricating and erecting the steel for the project, Walters Group is also providing the team with design assist services.

“We’re honoured to share our years of industrial sector expertise with our partners for the benefit of the regional community,” said Kranendonk. “The sooner this plant is operational, the more everyone benefits.”

The plant is initially expected to create 220 jobs. The facility has the potential to grow and add jobs as other GE businesses come on board. The new facility, situated on the Harry Diffin Industrial Park near Highway 140, is expected to begin production in the first quarter of 2018.16-385-GE-560px
