Walters Group Advancing Algoma EAF Melt Shop Towards a Greener Future

Algoma Steel Inc. is pioneering the transition to sustainable steel production with the construction of two cutting-edge electric-arc-furnaces (EAFs), to replace their existing traditional blast furnace and basic oxygen steelmaking operations. This bold initiative cements Algoma Steel’s position as the premier North American provider of green steel, thereby reducing carbon emissions by an impressive 70%. As a result, this project represents one of Canada’s most significant GHG reduction initiatives.

In close collaboration with Algoma Steel, Danieli, JNE Engineering, and EllisDon, Walters Group has played a pivotal role in developing the new construction Electric Arc Furnace EAF Melt Shop plant in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. Walters utilized Algoma’s steel plate products to fabricate the heavy structural components and will partner with local industrial contractor SIS Manufacturing Inc., to create these critical elements. Walters Group delivered the connection engineering, detailing, supply and installation of structural steel, heavy crane girders, stick steel, and plate modules.

With the on-site assembly of the building structure completed, our focus has shifted to the installation of 27 towering 40ft dust hood modules, strategically positioned atop the impressive 180ft structure. These innovative EAF dust hoods above the furnace will efficiently channel smoke and heat through a sophisticated duct system to the scrubbers, significantly minimizing environmental impact.

Walters Group is committed to supporting our partners in building projects that promote a sustainable future. As part of our sustainability strategy, we offer highly efficient structural steel solutions, to help construct the necessary infrastructure for decarbonization and meeting environmental objectives.
