The 222.3m (729 ft) TELUS Sky Tower brings 59 floors of office space and residential space to downtown Calgary. The mixed-use development dramatically increases the urban density of the area, with a flood of new office workers, residents and retail stores. The tower was built to LEED Platinum standards and is expected to use 80% less energy in comparison to similar-sized towers. TELUS Sky Tower is the third tallest building in Calgary, behind Brookfield Place East and The Bow, both of which were also Walters projects.
Walters’ role was to provide fabrication and erection of the structural steel in the Atrium, +15 bridge, Cantilevers from Levels 3 to 6, Level 29 and the roof. We also provided parkade columns for the seven parking levels within this building.
An interesting challenge was finding space to work on-site. Along with working onsite with very minimal laydown area, the atrium wall and stairs we installed were between an existing building and TELUS Sky, which are under 6 meters away from each other.
