2 Queen Street West

The owner, Cadillac Fairview, required an extensive restoration and expansion of 2 Queen Street West. This heritage building is prominently situated on the northwest corner of Yonge and Queen Street in downtown Toronto. This project, designed to improve the quality and utility of the property while preserving its unique architectural features, included restoring the original 1885 façade with the addition of three more storeys to the building. Furthermore, the top floor now accommodates a first-class restaurant with an exterior terrace. Overall, the redevelopment comprised 23,150 square feet of office space and 22,011 square feet of retail and storage space.

Facts & Figures
  • Approximately 800 tons
  • The building is seven storeys (3 floors of Retail, 4 floors of Office, and 1 Restaurant). Top floor extends above the Eaton Centre parking garage
  • Existing façade is 125+ years old and was restored to ‘like new’ condition
Our Role

Walters was responsible for supply, detail, connection design, fabrication and erection of temporary and permanent Structural Steel and Metal Deck.

Overcoming Challenges

As the existing 125+ year old façade was in poor condition, anchoring steel was difficult. Located on a very busy intersection in Toronto, deliveries were be made from Yonge St. during the late morning/early afternoon time-frame to minimize disruption to downtown traffic.

Space was limited as well. Lay down areas and site erection of the trusses occurred at the Eaton Center parking garage level, which is located at the top floor.
